Khador Grolar, Redux

Before entering this piece at Gencon this year I gave it another pass and added more detail. Mainly more time being spent on the banner. Which worked in my favor, I was happy to take the best in category prize in the Warjack/Warbeast category :) So here he is, being finished for the second time.

Years ago, I used to work at a tattoo shop, which showed me a lot about the world of art I didn't know. One of the sayings my boss instilled in me was that most works of art are never truly finished but only abandoned. This didn't apply to tattoos of course, we were talking about painting. So I picked up where I left off on this one which is something I never do. Here's a look at the before or first time finishing.

Leading to Gencon

At the end of this week, I'll be heading down to Gencon. I can't wait but need the time in between to polish off some projects. I took the weekend off (sorry for the delay in posting) in order to build the creative  juice back up. I've been painting like a madman and sometimes a little time away is just what the doctor ordered. The doctor likes gin on the weekends too so I followed suit.

Today, I spent wrangling in the Trollblood battlegroup I've been working on.

I also did a wee bitty sculpture of a bunny, which will find his place later tomorrow. See you soon patches!

The night is young and my mission for this evening will be to re-examine the khador 'Jack I painted a month ago. I think his banner has something to learn from the Teknes banner I painted for the last Crystal Brush. The Grolar was rushed a bit as I was flexing hard for competition season. Now it's time for a little patience.

Preparing the Banner of House Teknes

I was really excited to get to this point. Some deep down and detailed freehand. After making some practice sketches to get a general idea I set to sketching my design over the black field. I didn't care to much about being messy here, it will all be covered in the end.

Next I layed down many swampy layers of the chosen colors and was able to start carving out my intended design.

With the foundation in place it was all straight forward.

Refining and refining, It's still not complete at this point but it's clear to see and is on autopilot from here to completion :)
